    With 48 years of experience in the world of martial arts and nearly 40 years of Wing Chun as his sole profession, Grandmaster Swift has spent his life perfecting the art of Wing Chun Kung Fu. Beginners, instructors, and masters of all styles continue to seek out Grandmaster Swift. Its originator, the Buddhist nun Ng Mui, was a master of Shaolin Kung Fu and used this knowledge to invent a way to take advantage of the weaknesses inherent in the other Shaolin systems.

    This new system was well-guarded and passed on to only a few, very dedicated students. In , Yip Man, who was considered to be the grandmaster of modern Wing Chun, brought the style out of China into Hong Kong and eventually to the rest of the world. She was an intelligent and athletic young girl, upstanding and forthright.

    Her mother died soon after her betrothal to Leung Bok Chau, a salt merchant of Fukien. Her father, Yim Yee, was wrongfully accused of a crime and, rather than risk jail, they slipped away and finally settled down at the foot of Tai Leung Mountain near the border between Yunan and Szechuan provinces.

    There they earned a living by running a shop that sold bean curd. Sung, in Honan Province. This aroused the fear of the Manchu government [a non-Chinese people from Manchuria in the North, who ruled China at that time], which sent troops to attack the Monastery. Although they were unsuccessful, a man named Chan Man Wai, a recently appointed civil servant seeking favor with the government, suggested a plan.

    He plotted with Siu Lam monk Ma Ning Yee and others who were persuaded to betray their companions by setting fire to the monastery while soldiers attacked it from the outside. Siu Lam was burned down, and the monks and disciples scattered. Tai Leung [also known as Mt. Chai Har]. It was there she met Yim Yee and his daughter Wing Chun from whom she often bought bean curd on her way home from the market.

    He tried to force Wing Chun to marry him, and his continuous threats became a source of worry to her and her father. Ng Mui learned of this and took pity on Wing Chun. She agreed to teach Wing Chun fighting techniques so she could protect herself. She trained night and day, until she mastered the techniques. Then she challenged the bully to a fight and beat him. Ng Mui later traveled around the country, but before she left she told Wing Chun to strictly honor the Kung Fu traditions, to develop her Kung Fu after her marriage, and to help the people working to overthrow the Manchu government and restore the Ming Dynasty.

    He in turn passed these techniques on to Leung Lan Kwai. Together they shared and improved their techniques, and thus the Six-and-a-half-point Long Pole was incorporated into Wing Chun Kung Fu. Leung Jan grasped the innermost secrets of Wing Chun, attaining the highest level of proficiency.

    Many Kung Fu masters came to challenge him, but all were defeated. Leung Jan became very famous. It can thus be said that the Wing Chun System was passed on to us in a direct line of succession from its origin.

    I write this history of the Wing Chun System in respectful memory of my forerunners. I am eternally grateful to them for passing to me the skills I now possess. A man should always think of the source of the water as he drinks it; it is this shared feeling that keeps our Kung Fu brothers together.

    Wing Chun Master

    It is an extremely sophisticated and effective martial art. Wing Chun is, first and foremost, a system of fighting, as opposed to being a sport or an art. There are no fancy moves or wasted motion in Wing Chun. It is not as visually appealing as other forms of Kung Fu, but it is extremely effective and efficient. Wing Chun allows the practitioner to defend and counter quickly with as little effort as possible and with almost no regard for the size or strength of the opponent.

    The Benefits of Wing Chun Wing Chun is an excellent self defence system and in addition to this the movements are all fundamentally beneficial to health. In our classes you will learn to move and coordinate your body in effective, efficient and dynamic ways which will allow you to defend yourself and help to make you stronger, healthier, more balanced and more relaxed.

    You will also develop a greater awareness and understanding of how your body and mind relate and work together. Wing Chun teaches correct posture, structure and alignment; once these are balanced effectively you will be stronger. Often strength is associated with hardness, and stiffness, but, due to the way that you achieve strength through training in Wing Chun, one of the key benefits is that you will also learn to become more relaxed and more responsive.

    This combination of qualities can enable a much smaller practitioner to defeat a larger opponent. Cambridge Kung Fu students learn to understand the ways in which they are inherently strong and weak and how to be able to identify this in others.

This is possible through understanding who you are, which will enable you to see others as they truly are. Our Classes Our classes begin by giving you an introductory education into the world of self defence, to raise your self confidence, to generally help you feel empowered through knowledge of what potential threats you may encounter and most importantly to support you in understanding what you are capable of.

    The goal is to help you understand how your body works now, and how to make it work more effectively through coordination exercises and drills.

    We teach you a system to develop your body to become more aware both visually and kinaesthetically. As you progress, the aim is to teach you a complete self defence system that allows anyone, regardless of size or strength, to defend themselves effectively against the modern threat they may face on the street today. You will become adept at understanding all aspects of modern combat including, range, timing, balance and movement. You will learn how to move softly in the face of superior strength, and to move with power into an opponents weak areas.

    As you continue your trasining, your development through the Wing Chun system allows you to grow as a martial artist and as a person. We will support you in your goals and teach you the beautiful system of Wing Chun, showing you how it can apply to all aspects of your life, which will help you to become a more confident, happier, healthier and safer person.

    This is the ultimate aim of Wing Chun. The four main aspects of our classes are: Forms: The Wing Chun forms serve as a reference for the principles, theories, and techniques of the system. There are three unarmed forms, one form practiced on the wooden dummy, and then two weapons forms. You are retraining your unconscious mind and physical body to respond automatically in a highly intelligent and strategic manner.

    Once connection is made, you are then able to utilise your Chi Sau skills. Self Defence: Situation based exercises and scenarios, this is where we put all your skills together in a less structured framework. For each scenario eg.

    Our classes also include elements of: Pad Work: Striking exercises working with a partner, whereby we will teach you how to use your bodies natural weapons in a relaxed and powerful way.

    This is a safe way to develop the eability to both give and recieve pwerful strikes, as well as training how to hit safely. Awareness Exercises: Games and exercises designed to raise your conscious and unconscious awareness of both your external and internal environment.

    You will learn how to move in a more coordinated, appropriate and relaxed way to potentially dangerous attacks. Each drill begins slowly and increases in speed, power, or intensity based on the ability and comfort levels of the specific students taking part. These movements are performed through the rotation of the circle at its center such as the ball joint in the shoulder. As a spherical shape can withstand a much stronger external impact than any other shape, these movements are highly effective for attacking and defending in a self-defense scenario.

    Brutal TV: The second form: Chum Kiu, focuses on coordinated movement of body mass and entry techniques to bridge the gap between practitioner and opponent and move in to disrupt their structure and balance. By focusing correctly, turning the body around the center and ignoring the resistance, you can turn effortlessly and the person resisting will just come along for the ride. Close range attacks using the elbows and knees are also developed here.

    The Chum Kiu form also teaches the development of the multi-vector force. An example being a stepping movement with a simultaneous Bong Sau and Dai Sau. As the body moves to the side, one arm creates a circle with the Bong Sau movement, while the other performs a raising Dai Sau movement, thereby creating three vectors of force.

    The combination of the three force vectors results in the generation of a tremendous amount of force. Brutal TV: The last form: Biu Jee, is composed of extreme short range techniques, low kicks and sweeps, and emergency techniques to counter attack when structure and center line have been seriously compromised, such as when the practitioner is seriously injured. As well as pivoting and stepping developed in Chum Kiu, a third degree of freedom involves more upper body and stretching is developed for more power.

    Such movements include close range elbow strikes and finger thrusts to the throat. After this comes the intermediate level which is Muk Yan Jong. This is performed on a wooden dummy which serves as a tool that helps the student to use Wing Chun Kiu against another human opponent.

    The benefits of learning Muk Yan Jong include improving power from the waist, conditioning of the hands and arms, and it teaches the student the correct distance. Brutal TV: Traditionally, Wing Chun predominantly consists of two weapons, butterfly swords and the dragon pole. The dragon pole is tapered wooden pole ranging anywhere from 8 to 13 feet in length.

    The pole has the advantage of its length and linear movements in attack with a minimal circular movement in defense. This technique, combined with the most efficient footwork in both attack and defense, allows the exponent to move in and out of range like lightning.

    Who is the best Wing Chun Fighter?

    In fact, it is said that once you hear the first impact of the pole, the victor has already been decided. Brutal TV: Butterfly swords are used in several Chinese martial arts. In Wing Chun, one notable aspect of butterfly sword combat is that its principles are the basis for all other weaponry.

    In theory, any object that can be held in the hands of a Wing Chun practitioner, will follow the same basic principles of movement as the butterfly swords. This is because the use of butterfly swords is simply an extension of empty-handed combat. It is recognition of your ability to pass on the knowledge that your teacher has taught you.
